How to sell a RV in Maryland
An RV bill of sale covers motorhomes, campers, travel trailers and fifth wheels. Motorhomes need an odometer reading like any motor vehicle; towable campers do not. Every state titles RVs through the DMV, so the buyer will need the signed title and this bill of sale to register.
Seller steps
- Confirm you hold clear title. If a lender is on the title, get the lien release before you list it.
- Agree on the price and fill in the Maryland RV bill of sale above with the buyer. Record the VIN and the exact odometer reading.
- Sign it. Signing in front of a notary is not always required in Maryland, but offices ask for it often enough that it is worth the few dollars.
- Sign the title over to the buyer exactly as your name appears on it, and complete the odometer section on the title if the RV has one.
- File a notice of sale or release of liability with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration if Maryland offers one, remove your plates if the state keeps plates with the seller, and cancel the insurance once the buyer has driven away.
Buyer steps
- Bring the signed bill of sale (or Maryland's VR-181), the signed title and your ID to the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration.
- Expect to pay sales or use tax on the price shown on the bill of sale, plus title and registration fees.
- Register within Maryland's deadline, commonly 10 to 30 days from the sale date, to avoid late penalties.
Before you sign
- Note whether it is a motorhome (odometer required) or a towable (no odometer).
- List every included item: generator, solar, hitch, leveling blocks, furniture.
- Check for a lien; many RVs are financed for 10 to 15 years.
- Photograph the VIN plate and the data sticker near the door.
Why a bill of sale matters for a RV
- RVs are high-value and often sold with generators, hitches and furnishings that should be listed.
- The DMV uses the price for sales tax, which on a $40,000 rig is real money.
- Motorhomes need federal odometer disclosure; this form includes it.
- An as-is clause protects the seller from water-damage and appliance claims later.

Maryland strongly recommends a bill of sale and requires a notarized VR-181 when the vehicle is 7 years old or newer and the price is used to set excise tax (sold below book value). Buyers submit it with the VR-005 title application and a safety inspection certificate. Plates stay with the seller.

Maryland RV bill of sale questions
Is a bill of sale required to sell a RV in Maryland?+
Maryland requires a bill of sale in common situations, such as when the title does not show the purchase price. Maryland strongly recommends a bill of sale and requires a notarized VR-181 when the vehicle is 7 years old or newer and the price is used to set excise tax (sold below book value). Buyers submit it with the VR-005 title application and a safety inspection certificate. Plates stay with the seller. Maryland publishes VR-181 for this; the PDF from this page carries the same information and is accepted alongside it.
Does a Maryland RV bill of sale need to be notarized?+
Notarization is not always required in Maryland, but offices often ask for it, so it is worth doing. The ready-to-sign pack includes a notary acknowledgment page formatted for Maryland.
Where does the buyer take the bill of sale in Maryland?+
To the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration or the county office that handles vehicle registration, together with the signed title, proof of insurance where required, and payment for tax and fees.
Does an RV bill of sale need an odometer reading?+
Only for motorhomes (Class A, B and C). Travel trailers, fifth wheels and pop-ups have no odometer, so leave that field blank; the generator hides the disclosure page for towables when the odometer is empty.
Can I sell a camper without a title?+
Some states exempt older or lighter campers from titling. If there is no title, the bill of sale becomes the main proof of ownership, so fill it out completely and get it notarized if your state asks for that.
