How to sell a snowmobile in Minnesota
A snowmobile bill of sale records the sled by year, make, model, engine size and VIN along with the price and date. Snowmobiles are registered through the DMV or the parks agency in snow states, and most of those offices want a bill of sale with the price for the transfer.
Seller steps
- Confirm you hold clear title. If a lender is on the title, get the lien release before you list it.
- Agree on the price and fill in the Minnesota snowmobile bill of sale above with the buyer. Record the VIN.
- Both parties sign and each keeps a copy. Minnesota does not require a notary.
- Sign the title over to the buyer exactly as your name appears on it, and complete the odometer section on the title if the snowmobile has one.
- File a notice of sale or release of liability with the Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services if Minnesota offers one, remove your plates if the state keeps plates with the seller, and cancel the insurance once the buyer has driven away.
Buyer steps
- Bring the signed bill of sale, the signed title and your ID to the Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services.
- Expect to pay sales or use tax on the price shown on the bill of sale, plus title and registration fees.
- Register within Minnesota's deadline, commonly 10 to 30 days from the sale date, to avoid late penalties.
Before you sign
- The VIN is on the right side of the tunnel or near the footboard.
- Record the odometer miles and any engine rebuild history.
- Include the registration number so the buyer can transfer it.
- List the trailer separately with its own VIN if included.
Why a bill of sale matters for a snowmobile
- Snow states register snowmobiles and tax the purchase price.
- Many older sleds have no title; the bill of sale carries ownership.
- Records mileage and condition before the buyer takes it on the trail.
- Trailers and covers add value and should be listed.
Selling a snowmobile? The $19 sell-your-vehicle kit adds a signed release of liability and a Minnesota checklist to the pack, so the handoff is finished the day you sign.

Minnesota snowmobile bill of sale questions
Is a bill of sale required to sell a snowmobile in Minnesota?+
Minnesota does not require a bill of sale, but the Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services recommends one. Minnesota transfers titled vehicles on the title itself; for vehicles not subject to titling the seller may assign ownership on the registration card, form PS2000 or a bill of sale naming the vehicle, date and buyer. Plates stay with the vehicle in Minnesota. Minnesota has no mandatory form, so any complete, signed bill of sale like the one generated here is accepted.
Does a Minnesota snowmobile bill of sale need to be notarized?+
Minnesota does not require notarization. Two signatures are enough. If you want extra certainty, the ready-to-sign pack includes a notary acknowledgment page you can use anyway.
Where does the buyer take the bill of sale in Minnesota?+
To the Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services or the county office that handles vehicle registration, together with the signed title, proof of insurance where required, and payment for tax and fees.
Do snowmobiles have titles?+
Some states title them, many only register them. The registration office on your state page will say. The bill of sale is accepted either way.
Can I sell a snowmobile out of state?+
Yes. Give the buyer the signed bill of sale and the title or registration; they register it in their own state.
